| Across Europe, this night marked the transition to winter. It was believed that at this time the souls of the dead visit their former homes to warm themselves by the fire. They wander around collecting donations of food and drink from the rest of the family. The souls of the dead could take on different guises - the evil ones were possessed by animals. Along with them are other dark forces: demons, brownies, witches. All evil spirits descend to the earth. In order not to become the prey of a dead shadow, people extinguished foci in houses and dressed up as scary as possible - in animal skins and heads, hoping to scare away evil spirits. An integral symbol of Halloween is a pumpkin head. The inside is removed from the pumpkin, the face is cut out and a candle is inserted inside. Pumpkin symbolizes the end of the harvest, the evil spirit and the fire that scares him away. So the ancient beliefs are concentrated in one subject. |
